If you have a baby or infant, you may well have experienced the softness and luxuriousness of minky fabric. Minky is a relatively new, silky soft microfiber that rivals cashmere in softness and replicates the silky feel of real mink. Sometimes called "minkee", this soft, plush fabric is typically made from 100% polyester and renowned as a wonderful fabric for making baby blankets, quilts, chair coverings, bedspreads, pillows, robes, and infant car seat covers.
Anything that needs to be soft can be accomplished using minky! As a material for infant car seat covers, minky is very versatile since it is readily available in many color variations, particularly soft pastels as well as a few bright colors. Texture variations are also available with flats and textures, from minky with soft raised dots, lines, diamonds, and even long or short pile. The combination of attractive variations in colors along with melt-in-your-hand textures makes minky the new standard for baby's stuffed animals, warm robes and wraps, and coverings of all types.
Minky Crib Sheets
Most standard infant and toddler seat covers are made from cotton or cotton/polyester blends. These materials, while durable, soft, breathable, and inexpensive, cannot match minky for cuddly softness and comfort. Here's how one parent described her child's experience with minky:
"I was first introduced to minky fabric when a friend gave us a minky crib sheet at my baby shower. Although it was obviously a soft and luxurious sheet, I was somewhat apprehensive to the idea of allowing my child contact with minky because it wasn't made of cotton. But one evening, as circumstances can change suddently with an infant in the house, I ended up one evening trying the minky crib sheet out of desperation. This happened when my daughter was about six months old; she seemed to be very happy with the minky sheet.
Later, however, when I tried to replace the minky sheet with a regular cotton sheet, I learned the hard way how much my daughter preferred the minky. That evening, when putting her to bed, my daughter began crying immediately. Initially, we couldn't figure out the problem: She had been fed, changed and made comfortable so we were confused. Finally, after nearly half an hour of high pitched wailing, my wife asked me if it could possibly be because of the sheet.
Springing to action, I ran downstairs, retrieved the minky sheet from the laundry and quickly replaced the cotton sheet. No more than 5 minutes later, my daughter was happily and soundly asleep. It goes without saying that we quickly bought extra minky sheets and have abandoned our views about cotton."
As a covering for infant carseats, minky can help relax and soothe a fussy child, allowing parents to focus on the serious endeavor of driving. The material is quick-drying, highly absorbent, and actually quite strong. And unlike real mink, minky fabric is completely vegan and holds up well under repeated washings. If you are planning on working with minky fabric on your own, however, you should note that it represents some additional challenges. For example, it can be difficult to work with -- the cut edges shed quite a bit and you have to pin it well before sewing because it stretches like crazy.
